The week ending June 28th 2015 produced a bit of hope and a lot of change in the United States of America. Barack Obama and his Administration were able to log three historic victories in the fields of healthcare, trade and equality. These changes in policy are certain to have a significant impact on the future of this country and its citizens.
It may come as a surprise to many that the issue of healthcare reform was even still an issue to begin with. Despite the signing of the Affordable Care Act into law on March 23rd 2010, the relentless efforts to repeal this change have been as consistent as the rising sun. After the Supreme Court upheld that the Affordable Care act allows the federal government to provide subsidies to aid the middle class and the poor, the days of repeals may finally be behind us. Imagine that? Permanent healthcare for all? Lord forbid!
The second wave of change took place in the game of trades. The Senate passed legislation that gives the President the power to fast track negotiations with the eleven countries involved in the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP). Essentially this will allow the administration to negotiate international agreements that congress can support or not support – but it would restrict their right to amend or filibuster the agreement. There’s no debating that this will expedite the process, but a lack of discourse among our elected officials over legislation that will affect us all is concerning. As much of a win as it may be for the Obama administration, we hope we aren’t on the losing end of this game.
Lastly, equality got a jolt in the arm to cap off this memorable week. The Supreme Court ruled that same sex marriage is now recognized throughout the nation and upheld by the constitution of the United States. No longer will individualsâ choices in marriage be restricted by beliefs but supported by Law.
The battle over this right was waged for many years but the recent backing by the Obama administration played a critical role in garnering public support and paving the road towards the finish line. No matter where your thoughts may rest on this issue the pursuit of happiness granted to all moves the needle of equality just a little closer to where it needs to be.
