"I have tried in my way to be free."

As if 2016 didn’t suck enough, musician and author Leonard Cohen died today at 82. Over his 60 year career, Cohen has written some of the most moving songs ever put to tape. Tracks like SuzanneBird on the Wire, and Who By Fire sit right beside the best of contemporaries like Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell. His latest record You Want It Darker is no exception. Cohen’s songs have been covered by artists far and wide, and here are five of my favorites.

Famous Blue Raincoat – Tori Amos

“Thanks for the trouble you took from her eyes
I thought it was there for good
so I never tried.”

Everybody Knows – Concrete Blonde

“Everybody knows that you love me baby
Everybody knows that you really do
Everybody knows that you’ve been faithful
Give or take a night or two”

I Can’t Forget – Pixies

“I loved you all my life
And that’s how I want to end it
The summer’s almost gone
The winter’s tuning up”

First We Take Manhattan – REM

“I’m guided by a signal in the heavens
I’m guided by this birthmark on my skin
I’m guided by the beauty of our weapons
First we take Manhattan, then we take Berlin”

Hallelujah – John Cale *

*Everyone else will put the beautiful Jeff Buckley version on their lists. For me, its all about John Cale.

“Maybe there’s a God above
But all I’ve ever learned from love
Was how to shoot at someone who outdrew you.”
